Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) works to improve the most important energy and land use policies around the world, with a particular focus on finance. CPI supports decision makers through in-depth analysis on what works and what does not. CPI works in places that provide the most potential for policy impact, including Brazil, Europe, India, Indonesia, Kenya and the United States. Our work helps nations grow while addressing increasingly scarce resources and climate risk. This is a complex challenge in which policy plays a crucial role. CPI is a small but dynamic organization, with a global reach and an entrepreneurial culture. We work hard to maintain an idea-driven, collaborative environment across all our teams.
CPI’s Climate Finance unit guides decision makers who are working to ensure economic growth while addressing increasingly scarce resources and climate risk. Enough capital exists to transition the world into a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. However, current investment in climate-friendly development falls far short of the need. CPI works to redirect finance from high- to low-carbon activities and helps decision makers use their resources wisely. We provide much-needed information on climate finance flows, apply in-depth analysis to guide decision makers on their efforts, and support innovation in finance to address investors’ needs and lower costs.
ABOUT OUR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Climate Finance Internship Program is designed to give qualified and highly motivated students and graduates the opportunity to work for a mission driven not-for-profit organization in a global setting. You will have the chance to improve your analytical and technical skills working alongside a skilled and dedicated team of analysts.
Please note, interns will contribute to CPI projects and analysis as an integrated team member and the research may not necessarily be well suited to that required for a thesis. Non-remunerated distance collaboration on theses may be considered if there is a strong fit with CPI’s ongoing research.
We invite applications to be submitted all year round. Application assessment will be done on a periodic and ‘needs arising’ basis.
For US students/graduates we will typically evaluate applications in February with a view to have you in post by May/June and work with us through the summer to end of August.
THE FINE PRINT
We pay all our interns an hourly salary dependent on the office location you will work in. You must have the right to live and work in the CPI office location you wish to complete your internship in – CPI is not able to provide visa sponsorship for candidates. Interns are responsible for their own visa, travel and accommodation arrangements.
CPI places high value on diversity in our workplace and we encourage all qualified individuals with diverse professional and academic backgrounds to apply. Our aim is to attract and recruit the best talent in the world.

Due to the high volume of applications received, we are not in a position to provide individual feedback and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview. If you are not contacted within six months following your application’s submission, you can assume your application has not been retained.
INTERNSHIPS DURING COVID-19
The vast majority of the CPI workforce is currently working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic and therefore we expect 2021 internship placements to be fully remote. As such, we are happy to accept applications from individuals not located in one of our locations, however you must be able and willing to work within the timezone of the rest of the project team. Further, you will need access to your own computer and use of Microsoft Office software.
